There are some great Christmas traditions in the US such as having loads of decorations on homes, putting up the Christmas tree, and not to mention the food. But apart from the well-known customs, a lot of random events are taking place in the US, things you’d have never thought of. So here a list of all the weirdest Christmas traditions we could find. Some might give back a lot more than you’d expect! And since this is the best time to relax and have fun, check out some of the best Christmas casino deals too.
Skiing Santas
You’d normally associate Santa with eating cookies and milk, having a massive white beard, having reindeer, and riding around in a slay. You’d have never thought Santa would be skiing around risking his life for a thrill. In Colorado, that’s exactly what you’ll find. You’ll find more than 750 Santas tearing it up on the ice/snow at an event known as the crested butte Santa ski crawl. The Santas will all meet at the top of the mountain for a photo before they make their way down to the bottom. It’s a great spectacle to watch, seeing tons of people dressed in red racing down a snow-filled mountain. If you want to take Santa to the reels and get some good cash, try one of the best Christmas slots – Fat Santa.
Elfapalooza
Similar to the crested butte Santa ski crawl, you’ll find a mass gathering of elves in the state of Alabama. They once held the world record of elf gatherings till Bangkok overtook that record with a gathering of 1,762 elves. Nevertheless, people turn up to the event known as the city park at Bienville Square. If you’re from Alabama and love Christmas, then this might be the event for you. Dress up and an elf and rock up the city park to join the event and be a part of the count in hopes of beating the world record. And since we all want to get something good this Christmas, there are also the rewarding online games you can play without having to head out at all.
Surfing Santa Competition
In the warmer states of America, you’ll find the surfing Santa competition. This is where some of the athletes in California will dress up in a Santa costume, wearing white beards, hats, and on some occasions a full red outfit. All of the proceedings from the competition go to a good cause. The charity is known as surfers headline, a surf camp for children with autism.
Hiding Pickles in the Christmas Tree
This is an interesting tradition that happens in America. Pickles are either used as ornaments hand hung up on the tree or hidden near the tree for the children to find. The child who finds the pickle gets an extra present for Christmas. You can only imagine all the kids scurrying around the tree trying to find a pickle that may or may not be in the location they expect. There’s no known origin for this tradition, it’s all a bit skewed. There are a few, let’s say grim stories for this tradition.
One being two boys killed an innkeeper who had put their bodies into a pickle jar, and Saint Nicholas (Santa) used his magic to revive them. Another odd story is a war soldier from Germany who took part in the American civil war asked for a pickle as part of his last meal while kept within a prison. The pickle magically kept him from dying as it sustained his body.
Having Popcorn on the Christmas Tree
Here’s another food-related tradition you’ll find in the US. Yet another weird one, putting food (Popcorn) on the Christmas tree. This one also has a German origin. When the Germans came to the state of Pennsylvania in the 16th century and the idea of a Christmas tree was fairly new, they tried adding foods to the tree. This involved adding things such as fruits, nuts and then eventually popcorn. Popcorn is normally used as a food eaten at the movie theatre or at home watching a movie. The rest of the world would find this a weird tradition.
